Chiekra is a young faerie who lives in a beautiful dale on the edge of the frontier with vast fields and scattered forests in which to play and explore. In her adventures, she meets all sorts of whimsical and magical creatures with whom she sings, plays, and dances. Her beauty, charm, and grace capture the hearts of all she meets, and soon the inhabitants dub her queen of the faeries, and her domain, “Chiekraana,” meaning “Chiekra’s land.”

I've been wanting to release an album of long-form ambient/dream pieces for several years now, and I'm happy that these four tracks have popped into being in the last several months. While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed life in so many ways, one of the best changes in my life has been that I've been able to spend more time making music.

Since the summer of 2020, I've been experimenting with modular synthesis, and it has captured my attention. Unfortunately, the first two systems I tried were simply too much for my 2018 MacBook Pro. So, while my imagination had been captured, it wasn't until I discovered miRack, which runs on both iOS and macOS, that my heart was captured. In fact, three of these four tracks (the two Chiekras and Tekgate) were created with miRack within a matter of two and a half weeks.

I have my 7-year-old godson Kinich to thank for the artwork. He introduced me to Hey Color, a rather addictive iOS coloring app, and we've spent long hours coloring together. The girl on the cover comes from Hey Color. I have named her "Chiekra," the queen of the faeries in her magical land. Her name is similar to "chakra," the energy points up and down the human spinal cord. I've found the music in this collection to center me and ground my heart while also allowing my dreams to wander through the cosmos (my imagination), feeding and moving me all along the way.

I introduced Kinich to spirograph, and have found a very cool iOS spirograph app which we also spend a lot of time playing with together. The spiral pattern behind Chiekra is a composite of several cool spirographs.
