Gayatri Mantra

about

A Hindu lullaby. Milena was singing her baby to sleep one evening-- a beautiful melody that I had never heard before. I grabbed my iPhone and recorded a few phrases before the baby fell asleep.

Milena's version being the first version I heard, and subsequently built this arrangement around, and not being a scholar of Vedic mantras, I make no claim to its sociocultural, spiritual, or historical accuracy. I simply loved the sound so much that I felt compelled to realize it in a fuller way.

That being said, this version has an unusual time signature-- or rather, an unusual series of time signatures. The full melody is 45 eight-notes in length, divided thusly:

5/4 6/4 6/4 5/4 1/8

At one point during the process of putting this piece together, I considered adding an additional eighth-note at the end, which would have made the phrase slightly-more "even;" however, I had already fallen in love with it the way Milena had sung it. And I'm glad this piece happened this way. It is perfect.

I dream of doing nothing other than making music and floating in zero-g. :-)
